Ken and Kathi Review: Golden Corral - Eastchester Dr, High Point, NCHow Disappointing. Not to mention Dangerous.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN CONTACTED 8/12/05
we ate at this restaurant and observed them using grill acid and window cleaner while food was still on bar - splashing it on the food - food was not removed even after manager was made aware. TERRIBLE smell
around salad bar, manager say that moisture is causing growth/smell there. Water is pouring out of the front of the building. The health department received all of this information with eagerness.ADA COMPAINT HAS BEEN FILED 8/12/05
staffpeople who were talking near the buffet who refused to move out of my way when I was headed back for the table with a plate of food in my lap (remember, I use a wheelchair). I said "Excuse me" several times. The two ladies moved, and finally shouted the guy out of my way in spanish. He was literally just standing there, looking at me. I kept inching forward in my chair, hoping he'd get the hint. The manager wouldn't even apologize for it. His comment was that although most of his people understand English, not all of them do. (Shouldn't people understand "Customer with plate of food coming, please move your body?… especially "customer who can't carry said food…???"
Golden Corral is buffet fare. However at this GC, you have to get past the smell of moldy tile at the salad bar, overpowering odor of cigarettes (worse than ANY restaurant we've ever been to), and steaks not cooked correctly. If you can, the food's edible. This particular GC is such a disappointment because most of their stores are friendly places (both of their Greensboro restaurants are. Asheboro is. What's up with High Point???)
The air conditioner pours rain on you as you're walking in. The cashier and her friend banter loudly about how soon they're closing - two hours before closing time. (Is it time YET?) The salad bar stinks - literally. So does the dessert bar. (mildew and cigarettes)
The manager impatiently listened to three SEPARATE customers complain about the food being sprayed down with grill acid window cleaner, and called each of us in turn liars - he actually told each of us that his staff is better trained than that and got all huffy about it.
Well, at least Pat, our waitress, was nice. As peeved as I was with our experience here, I do want it known to the world that our waitress took good care of us. She overheard us from a great distance away, talking in hushed tones about the odors and then the grill cleaner - she *made* the manager come over. Good for her!!
Allergies - MOST of the time I can find things to eat at GC restaurants. Since it's a buffet, be
careful. Dont eat the steak or pork chops if you're concerned with gluten. Many of their foods are treated with MSG. Also watch the desserts - nuts are a concern on all buffet lines.
Ease of Wheelchair Access: The guy who wouldn't move out of my way got this particular GC reported to the feds. Otherwise, this particular store seems to have been designed more logically than the others. (ironic isn't it??) The buffet is easier to reach, and the bathrooms are MUCH
bigger and more logically laid out than the Greensboro GC's are. If you are using a cane, DO watch the water outside, there might be slick spots.
We're hoping that the health department will do their job and get this place cleaned up - and that logical consequences will befall the dude that was managing that night. Those two action-items may have the effect of returning this Golden Corral to being an edible, enjoyable experience.
