Why I vote for Howard Coble
We were talking on EW about a recipe book from assorted Senators and Reps… Mine, Howard Coble, included a recipe for Brains and Eggs… a very traditional North Carolina breakfast.
:::shudders:::
I commented that he gets my vote
I had wanted to explain why but we’ve got a pretty strict no-politicking rule over there and I didn’t want to violate my own rule ![]()
Howard gets my vote for a variety of reasons - I’ve called his office a number of times for assistance and to offer feedback on political issues. Rebecca down in the Asheville office is incredibly helpful and attentive - she gets things done!
The # 1 reason is this: We were at Stamey’s one night (local restaurant), and when we left, Ken was having an awful time loading up the wheelchair. An elderly gentleman came over and offered to help him load it up. Ken looked at the guy and said he had it and sure enough just as he said it, it drove up the ramp. Ken thanked him and they shook hands and the guy ambled off to his car. About two seconds after the guy’s door shut Ken and I looked at each other and we realized, “That was Howard Coble!” We’d met him before at a function, but it had been a long time since we’d seen him. Plus it was night-time and in the half-light it was kind of hard to see.
Sure enough, the special House license plate was on his car… It really had been Howard!
When I say “elderly” - he would’ve been 73 or so at the time. The fact that he offered to help and did not introduce himself or call attention to who he was spoke volumes as to his character, you know? Every other politician I know of would have pumped Ken’s hand and said, “I’m so and so from the 42nd Congressional District” and pretended to care what our names were, and encouraged us to get out and vote. Not Howard - he just wanted to make sure that my chair got loaded up so we could go home.
Good guy…
