Well THAT was a little scary.

Posted by Kathi on April 12, 2007

I just tried to edit one of my posts with the MORE tag to make it shorter on the page (that Easter Bunny one)… I’m not sure what went wrong, but WRONG it went. Horribly.

Not only did it not split the post, suddenly I couldn’t edit it. When I accessed the edit screen in Word Press, the SAVE button was missing!

Weird, weird, weird, weird.

After a brief moment’s panic, I figured the worst that could happen if I tried to fix it myself would be that I’d blow up the whole thing and spend tomorrow rebuilding the site. Ehhhhh.

So I went into phpMyAdmin and poked around. When I used to use SimpleMachines at the ExWitch Forum, I used phpMyAdmin a lot, but I’ve not really messed with it when it comes to WordPress. It’s pretty simple, actually… a whole lot simpler than the SMF setup.

If you run into a similar issue with something going wrong in a post and you need to fix it from the back end, simply log into your phpMyAdmin, access your WP database, and navigate to wp_posts (left column). Then, in the resulting list on the right-hand side, put a check-mark in the field that says “Post Content”. Up at the top of that list, click the link/button that says, “Browse”. That will open up a new field or window that contains all of the posts.

Find the post in question (if you have a lot of posts, that may take you a moment – keep in mind they go in order. #1 is your first post; #286 (or whatever the highest number is) is the last post you made.

Click the edit button (little pencil to the left), make your changes, and scroll to the bottom. Make sure that “save” is toggled, and click “Go”. It’s done!

I think I would have cheated first and hit “repair” :)

Kyle, do you mean the process described here:

    http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/repair/

We had to do something like that with one of our forums, a long, long time ago (it was actually long ago that it might’ve been phpbb, not SMF, can’t recall for sure).

In any case, I was sure glad for a backup, and I was making strangled noises trying not to say bad things over the meaning of the word “repair”.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try a larger hammer” :D

Something like. Though I don’t remember so many steps the last time I did it. Every time I’ve had DB problems, repairing has fixed it. (Except in those cases where I’ve just uploaded a new version – with errors!)
