Last time I was at the health food store, they were out of the thick rolled oats I usually buy. I got steel-cut oats instead. I’ve never had them before.
I’m cooking some now with a big handful of frozen berries. I’ve been REALLY craving oatmeal for a day or two… I think my bod must be lacking a vitamin or something… I could eat oatmeal by the gallon and otaheite apples by the bushel. Well – at least I can get my hands on oatmeal. You can’t get O’apples here in the states (that I know of) – they’re strictly caribbean and too soft to ship here.
Wonder what vitamins are in oatmeal? B’s I think…

Oats are great – lots of protein and they lower cholesterol. Real comfort food too; I slice a banana and splosh maple syrup in mine. One cup of oats is very high in B6 – 147% of the RDA. Also good on B3 (39%), phosphorus (38%), selenium (39%), magnesium (30%), iron (19%) and zinc (17%). I make grated apple & maple syrup oat cookies/flapjacks when the kids are here.
Kathi – you can buy otaheite apple plants on Ebay. One on there at the moment for $40.
Consumer Reports just rated Quaker steel-cut oats the best in flavor; I’d never heard of “steel-cut” before….
I havnt either…
I know one thing for sure is that they are low GI and a bowl of oats for my kids in the morning lasts them till lunch! They are great and I really try and buy organic oats when in the bigger town.
I am making granola, mmmmmmm.
I hate steel cut oats, they make a mess that is hard to clean up!! I accidently boiled over a pot, just a little, CEMENT!
