This all happened Monday and I was typing it up Tuesday AM when I got a call that I needed to take Mother somewhere… it was waiting for me to finish up when I signed on this morning :)

Zoom Zoom! I traded the smelly stained van in for a zippy little Mazda 6. The guy at the rentacar place was HORRIFIED that the van had been rented out like that – between the stains, the smell, and the fact that the airbag light was on, he gave me half a tank of gas for free!

So by the time I wrapped up errands, it was too late to go back home, so the chiro let me come early. But it took a while. So, I was still at the chiro’s when Ken got there. The elderly gent who comes with his wife started talking about going to Church’s Chicken when she got done. Well, that was all she wrote.

Church’s has THE BEST fried okra in the history of the world. They’re chicken’s pretty good, too. But I could just sit and eat okra. (My mouth is watering as I type this… wonder if okra’s good for breakfast. Bet it is!) In fact, the okra was so good last night, Ken went and bought a second large order of it for me.

Anyway, we finished eating and started to pull out of the parking lot in separate cars. As I started to pull away, I caught sight of someone moving outside my window, a ways off. Before I registered that it was a screaming woman, God told me to stop and give her what she needed.

Church’s is NOT in a good part of town – that area is eaten up with prostitution, drugs, gangs, adult video stores… robberies are quite common in that section of Greensboro.

So my first thought, when God told me to stop, was “I’m going to get robbed. I just know it.”

His response was, “Who’s concern is that, Mine or yours? I told you to stop.”

So, stop I did. It turns out that the young lady had just been assaulted by her boyfriend (that part we’re sure was true – she was sporting fresh bruises and a rising lump on her head), hadn’t eaten in a while, and was just at the end of her rope. We bought her some chicken (which she ate like a starving person!) and took her to where she’d have a warm bed, and shared Jesus with her. She didn’t rob us.

I wonder, did God have us stop to help her… or to teach us a lesson about trusting Him!

She reminded me so much of myself, the day Bob beat me up and put me and the baby out of the car in the freezing cold. Some nice people saw me walking down the street with a carseat and no coat, stopped, and took me to their home and fed me. If they hadn’t done that – who knows what would have happened to me.

So – we may not ever know what happened to her, til we get to heaven. I hope and pray that she finds her way Home.

  1. Lesson for you, help for her… clearly it was/is both. It is also a lesson for us, the Church – I think it was Jesus who, when moved by compassion, originally modeled this for us.

Job well done and thanks for the reminder!

At least you knew it was God yelling at you to stop instead of all in your head.
