Homeschool Consultant

Are you interested in homeschooling your children?

There are as many reasons to homeschool as there are people doing so. There are also as many ways to homeschool as there are homeschooling families!

Many people assume that they could never teach their children… they’re not certified teachers or lack a college education. They may lack certain skills (who remembers trigonometry anyway?) or they may feel that they don’t have enough time and money to homeschool.

I have good news for you! In the state of North Carolina, you do not need any special degree to teach your children at home - just your high school diploma or GED. If you never graduated yourself, there are other options available (such as entering a two-family homeschool arrangement or having a relative assume the responsibility). While parents are responsible for the teaching of primary subjects, they can work with a tutor, co-op, or outside consultant to facilitate advanced courses.

The best news is that most students can be effectively taught in much less time than public schools take up - even if you have a full-time job, you can still teach your children at home! Curriculum need not be expensive - it can often be obtained online, at the library, or through other homeschoolers at little or no cost.

Would you like to start homeschooling your children? Although you can do so on your own, it helps to consult someone who’s been there and knows the ropes. I can…

  • Help you make an informed decision about whether homeschooling will work for your family - including tips on how to tell relatives and neighbors, planning for Driver Education, and more
  • Help you file the required paperwork with the state and withdraw your children from public school
  • Guide you to local, state, and national homeschool groups and resources where you can get support
  • Help you make an educational plan and schedule that fits your lifestyle and the children’s learning styles. There are as many ways to homeschool as there are homeschooled children - some benefit from highly structured activities, and others learn better from unschooling or delight-directed learning. You can decide what will work best but keep a fluid plan. Remember, you’ll be learning along with the children!
  • Show you how to evaluate and choose curriculum and testing materials - including ways to homeschool for free! I’ll even tell you where to get discounts and freebies designed just for homeschoolers at bookstores, museums, the zoo, and more!
  • Warn you about potential educational, family, and financial pitfalls and common mistakes
  • Give you templates for record-keeping (use as-is or adapt and customize!)
Work with you to accommodate and overcome special needs and disabilities (yours or the children’s)
  • Show you how to prepare your children for high school and college level work
  • Help you if you run into a snag - kids unmotivated, curriculum not working, stress
  • And much more!

My name is Kathi Sharpe and my husband and I live in Level Cross, NC, which is between Greensboro and Randleman. We are passionate followers of Jesus Christ, parents, pet lovers and avid cooks.
I homeschooled our children for many years and learned a lot along the way! I remember how intimidated my husband and I were when we got started - we were so afraid we might be unknowingly breaking the law and that the truant officer might show up at any moment. We were also terrified that we might do something “wrong” and our children would be lacking in their education. I spent hours and hours doing research and learning all I could about homeschooling.

My son, who has special needs, graduated high school several months early. The public school had told us that he was ineducable in mathematics, but by the time he graduated he was competent in math and all other subjects! Additionally, he was able to pursue several opportunities for extracurricular activities that greatly enriched his homeschool experience. When he was younger, a psychiatrist advised me to commit him to an institution and go on with my life. Instead, we persevered and now this young man is about to be promoted in his job and is considering college opportunities.

My daughter did so well on her first homeschooling end of grade tests that I advanced her a grade. When she was going to be entering her Junior year of high school, she persuaded us that she should be allowed to attend public school again. She wants to be a special education teacher, and our local school offered an actual internship opportunity. When we arrived with our homeschooling transcript, the school refused to accept her as a junior - she had too many credits! They made her a senior, and she graduated with a 4.033 average. She was immediately accepted at a private Christian college at the age of 16, where she continues to do extremely well in all her studies.

I have helped many families begin home education and love to see children thriving. Kids have a natural love of learning, and when we can tap into that energy and help them to grow that love, exciting things happen! Would you like to begin the adventure of home education? Email or call me today.
