Level Cross has its very own lake. Well, almost. We do have to share it with Randleman and High Point. But no matter. If you take a right turn at the end of our road, go about 2 miles, and make a left turn you will end up at the lake. Rumor has it that they’re building a boat launch and recreation area down there.

Soon, 1001 fishermen with boats will be out there on the lake. It’s stocked with bass and other fish. Ken’s pondered if maybe they’ll do the Bass Pro tournament there someday!

Fishermen need boats, and boats need stuff. If you wander into any of the local sporting goods stores, “stuff” is expensive, and there’s not that great a selection. Enter American Marine Supply, a purveyor of nautical gifts, boating supplies, and recreational accessories.

This place has everything from sailboat supplies and fiberglass repair kits to nautical jewelry and binoculars, all at great prices. They even have a special order desk on the (rare) chance that you can’t find what you’re looking for. They are even offering free shipping on certain orders! Can’t beat that!

Rodeo anyone?

I have to confess. I’ve never been to a rodeo. This is in spite of living in a town with a yearly rodeo, in a community with one just about every weekend all summer long. It’s just escaped my attention. We saw a commercial for a rodeo last night, and Ken says, “Let’s go.”

What? Go and watch smelly sweaty cowboys riding smelly sweaty angry bulls?

My husband says there’s much more to it than that. He promises, in fact, that I’ll love a rodeo. I’m intrigued. He’s never been wrong about things I’ll love before!

So, looking around (and including some vacation dreams in the mix), I found the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. We don’t gamble, but there’s plenty to do in Vegas other than gambling, and we’ve always wanted to visit. December would be a fine time for a Christmas-present vacation, but still early enough that we’ll be home for the kids.

It turns out that the WNF Rodeo is a ten-day event, held at a university campus in Vegas. Wrangler National Finals Rodeo tickets aren’t that expensive… of course, price depends on where you sit (do you want roping or bucking side?) and, of course, lower-level tix are more expensive. But still… they’re not bad!

At the end of the rodeo, world champions will be crowned. Wikipedia says that the NFR has lots of different competitions… Bareback riding, Steer wrestling, Team roping, Saddle bronc riding, Tie-down roping, Bull riding, and Barrel racing.

I discovered something I didn’t know about rodeos. I thought they were exclusively male events. It turns out that cowgirls are real!

Wikipedia also says that this event is so popular, they sell out of tickets very quickly. I knew rodeos were popular, but wow… maybe I’ve been missing something all these years? That’s a big coliseum that they’re selling out! Of course, this event is like the Superbowl of rodeos.

NFR has a neat site with lots of information, stuff for sale, info about Cowboy Christmas (a huge gift show!), and fan stories. It’s neat to see how others respond to the rodeo.

I’m going to go talk to Ken about going! :)

I keep running across interesting sites – this morning I found something called Dial-a-Flight. They are a British travel agency that allows you to plan your vacation on the web, then call them up to actually do the booking (I don’t know about you, but when I book a flight or hotel, I like a reassuring voice on the line. That’s a lot of money, and I want to be SURE that it gets booked correctly!) While you don’t have to be a British citizen to use their services, it seems that you do have to be traveling from the UK.

This company offers, for example, flights to Canada – so you can see the ice hotel (brrrr!), go dog sledding, order Poulets McCroquettes (Chicken McNuggets) in Montreal, or witness in an exceedingly secular country that needs Jesus.
Called to Kenya, India, or Russia? They’ve got a flight. (In fact, their price to Moscow looks to be very inexpensive!). They’ll also book you a hotel and find you a rental car. Assuming you’re a UK citizen, they’ll help with your travel documents. If not, they can direct you to the appropriate agency from which to get them. Me? I’ll head to Panama…
